A Tale of Two Cities

Charles Dickens

Book Description

A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel by Charles Dickens, set during the years leading up to and during the French Revolution. The story takes place in two cities—London and Paris—and explores themes of sacrifice, justice, love, and resurrection. The novel begins with the release of Dr. Alexandre Manette, who has spent eighteen years imprisoned in the Bastille. He is reunited with his devoted daughter, Lucie Manette, in London. Lucie later marries Charles Darnay, a French nobleman who rejects the cruelty of his aristocratic family. Sydney Carton, a talented but self-destructive lawyer, also falls in love with Lucie but believes he is unworthy of her. As the French Revolution erupts, the oppressed citizens rise against the aristocracy. Darnay returns to France to help a former servant but is arrested because of his noble background. Despite several attempts to save him, he is sentenced to death. In the novel’s climax, Sydney Carton performs a remarkable act of self-sacrifice. Resembling Darnay in appearance, he secretly takes Darnay’s place in prison and goes to the guillotine, allowing Darnay to escape and live happily with Lucie and their family. The novel ends with Carton’s noble sacrifice, symbolizing redemption and the triumph of love over selfishness. This book is copyright free and can be downloaded without any cost.
